Creating your own course can be exciting and empowering, but it can also be a lot of work! Engage in this module to think through concrete strategies for effectively developing an aligned, rigorous course of study.
Objectives and Competencies
Knowledge:
- Locate or create a summative assessment.
- Locate or create formative assessments.
- Identify hotspots and common misconceptions such as pacing (breadth v. depth) including relevant and aligned topics in a self-designed course.
Skills:
- Long term backwards plan from the assessment such as year-long plans and unit plans.
- Short term backwards plan from assessments such as lesson plans.
- Align instruction to Common Core or state standards.
- Incorporate regular literacy practice into instruction.
Mindset:
- Develop a culturally responsive approach and invest students in the power of your self-designed course such as exploring how African American history, women’s history, etc. has shaped our society.
