Learn ways to help students navigate the intricate matrix of government and civics while learning how civics is relevant and applicable to their own lives.

Knowledge:
- Locate or create a summative assessment.
- Locate or create formative assessments.
- Identify hotspots and common misconceptions such as pacing (breadth v. depth) and topics that are difficult to teach such as concurrent powers, electoral college
- Long term backwards plan from the assessment such as year-long plans, unit plans.
- Short term backwards plan from assessments such as lesson plans.
- Align instruction to Common Core or state standards.
- Incorporate regular literacy practice into instruction.
Mindset:
- Invest students in government and civics such as how individual citizens can have an impact on government policy.
- Develop a culturally responsive approach to teaching this course by addressing topics such as the ways that historically underrepresented groups (women, African Americans, immigrants) have fought for voice and representation in the U.S.
