Course: Pre-Civil War US History

Do you want to build out your content knowledge of early American history?  Are you interested in developing a culturally responsive approach to teaching students about early America?  Complete this module to learn how to create a strong, cohesive instructional experience around pre Civil War US History.​

Objectives and Competencies
Knowledge
  • Locate or create a summative or formative assessment.
  • Identify hotspots and common misconceptions; e.g. pacing (breadth v. depth), topics that are difficult to teach; e.g. states’ rights and reasons for the Civil War.

Skills
  • Long term backwards plan from the assessment; e.g. year-long plans, unit plans.
  • Short term backwards plan from assessments; e.g. lesson plans.
  • Align instruction to Common Core or state standards.
  • Incorporate regular literacy practice into instruction.

Mindset
  • Invest students in pre-Civil war history; e.g. understanding the foundations of U.S. government and the constitution.
  • Develop a culturally responsive approach to teaching this unit by addressing topics such as Native American genocide and slavery.
