Modern world history is one of the most dynamic and compelling focus areas you can teach as a Social Studies educator. Learn ways to teach a modern history course that is culturally responsive and engaging.

- Locate or create a summative assessment.
- Locate or create formative assessments.
- Identify hotspots and common misconceptions such as pacing (breadth v. depth) and topics that are difficult to teach such as effects of global conflict.
Skills:
- Long term backwards plan from the assessment such as year-long plans, unit plans.
- Short term backwards plan from assessments such as lesson plans.
- Align instruction to Common Core or state standards.
- Incorporate regular literacy practice into instruction.
Mindset:
- Invest students in understanding the significance of modern history such as how the end of colonialism and the rise of independence movements shaped the international political system.
- Develop a culturally responsive approach to teaching this course by addressing topics such as civil rights movements, human rights and genocide.
