Geography involves much more than maps! Learn how to help support students in learning about regional culture, history, language and politics as well as the interconnectedness of our world.
Objectives and Competencies
Knowledge:
- Locate or create a summative assessment.
- Locate or create formative assessments.
- Identify hotspots and common misconceptions such as pacing (breadth v. depth), topics that are difficult to teach such as boundary disputes and migration.
Skills:
- Long term backwards plan from the assessment such as year-long plans, unit plans.
- Short term backwards plan from assessments such as lesson plans.
- Align instruction to Common Core or state standards.
- Incorporate regular literacy practice into instruction.
Mindset:
- Invest students in geography such as understanding how physical geography shapes our lives and opportunities, and how cultures are inter-connected to one another.
- Develop a culturally responsive approach to teaching this course by addressing topics such as the global influence of non-European cultures.
